Many salon clients would rather text than call. They want to move an appointment, ask if there is a slot this afternoon, send a photo of the color they want, or say they are running ten minutes late. Client messaging tools give the salon one business number and a shared inbox for those messages, so they do not end up on a stylist's personal phone where nobody else can see them.
The tools here range from full platforms to simple texting services. Podium and Weave combine texting with web chat, review requests and payments, and Weave also runs your phones. SimpleTexting, Heymarket and EZ Texting focus on business texting: two-way conversations, scheduled messages and text campaigns to opted-in clients. Your salon software may already send reminders, so the question is often whether you also need a team inbox for real conversations.
AI features in this category are mostly reply help. Tools draft answers to common questions, summarize long threads, suggest replies based on your past messages, or answer simple questions on their own. Decide what the AI may send without a person checking it. Booking questions with clear answers are fine; anything about a complaint, a refund or a reaction to a service should wait for a person.
Consent matters more for texting than for email. In the US, marketing texts need clear consent, an easy way to opt out, and a registered business number with the carriers. Reminders about a booked appointment are treated differently from promotions. Ask each vendor how they collect and store consent, how they handle carrier registration, and what happens when a client replies STOP.

Check how messages connect to the rest of your systems. A text from a client is most useful when the desk can see the client's next appointment next to it, and can book or move it without switching screens. Ask which salon and booking systems each tool connects with, and whether that connection is two-way or only for sending reminders.
A good test is a normal Saturday. Have two people answer texts from the trial inbox while the desk is busy, and see whether anyone loses track of who replied, whether notes stay with the client, and how quickly a booked change shows in the calendar.
Finally, keep the tone human. Clients text a salon because it feels personal. Templates and AI drafts save time, but read them before they go out, sign messages with a name, and avoid sending so many promotions that clients mute your number.
Not always. Reminders from your booking system cover confirmations and changes. A messaging tool helps when clients text you a lot and several people need to answer from one number, or when you want text campaigns and review requests in one place.
Only clients who have agreed to marketing texts, and every message needs a way to opt out. Rules differ by country and state, and US carriers also require business numbers to be registered. Your texting provider should guide you through both.
Most tools let you choose. Many salons let it answer simple questions such as hours or open slots, and keep a person on anything else. Review its replies for the first few weeks to see whether they match how your salon talks.
Most tools have a mobile app so staff can reply from the shared business number on their own phones. That keeps the conversation history with the salon if a stylist leaves, and keeps personal numbers private.
